Director Zach Cregund Cregger is moving away from horror for his next feature film, according to a report from polygon.com. The filmmaker, known for the horror hits Barbarian and Weapons, will write and direct an original science fiction project titled The Flood.

Warner Bros. has already set a release date for the film on August 11, 2028. The studio, which previously backed Cregger's Weapons, is also bringing Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment onto the project.

While specific plot details for The Flood remain under wraps, Cregger has expressed high confidence in the script. During a 2025 interview on the Big Picture podcast, the director described the screenplay as "my favorite thing" and "maybe the best thing I ever wrote."

Cregger noted that he penned the script during a period of transition between filming Barbarian and preparing for Weapons. He admitted he initially wrote the story without the expectation of ever directing it, adopting a mindset of "who gives a shit" regarding its production.

Cregger expands Warner Bros. slate with prequel Gladys

The upcoming sci-fi epic is not the only project Cregger has tied to the studio for 2028. Warner Bros. also confirmed development on a prequel to his film Weapons titled Gladys.

The prequel will focus on the early history of the character played by Amy Madigan. Although Cregger will not direct this installment, he is set to co-write the story alongside Zach Shields, according to polygon.com.

Warner Bros. plans to release Gladys on September 8, 2028, just a few weeks after the premiere of The Flood.
