Director Ian TuSON is planning a revival of the Paranormal Activity franchise with the goal of redefining the found-footage genre, according to a report from polygon.com.
Tuason, who recently directed the A24 horror film Undertone, has signed on to direct the upcoming project, currently working under the title Paranormal Activity 8. The film is slated for release on May 21, 2027.
Tuason says he has been granted "full control" over the production. He intends to blend elements from the original trilogy with influences from other found-footage classics.
"I want to take the best out of the first three, plus other found-footage films that influenced me," Tuason told polygon.com. "I'm going to take some elements there and I'm going to create a hybrid that's going to define the found-footage genre."
Modernizing the lens
While the director wants to maintain a "super DIY" aesthetic, he plans to utilize contemporary hardware to capture the horror. The production will move beyond traditional handheld cameras to include modern household tech.
"It's still going to look like someone shot it using cameras they have around the house," Tuason said. He noted the use of iPhones, security cameras, and even smart fridges to document the film's events.
This project marks the first entry in the series since the 2021 streaming release, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. Tuason declined to confirm if the new installment will feature legacy characters or serve as a total reboot of the timeline.
Tuason plans to apply lessons learned from his debut feature, Undertone, to the high-profile Blumhouse revival. He noted that his experience filming Undertone with friends helped him learn to focus on the art while blocking out outside noise.
"What I learned most is just to focus on the art and do the best you can to block out all other noise," Tuason said.
The production team includes heavyweights from the horror genre. James Wan, creator of The Conjuring series, joins alongside Blumhouse head Jason Blum and original director Oren Peli as producers.
