Deep Silver announced Monday that the next entry in 4A Games' Metro series, Metro 2039, will be officially revealed this Thursday during an Xbox First Look showcase.

The digital-only broadcast will feature a world-premiere look at the title. Fans can stream the event at 10 a.m. PDT via the Xbox YouTube channel.

This marks the first new mainline release in the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter franchise since 2019's Metro Exodus. Metro 2039 will serve as the fourth installment in the series, which draws its setting and lore from the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

A continued partnership with Xbox

While Microsoft has not labeled the upcoming title an Xbox exclusive, the company expressed enthusiasm for the reveal. "Xbox has always been a home for the franchise, and we’re honored to continue that relationship by bringing you a first look at this next exciting chapter," Microsoft stated in a press release.

The Metro franchise follows survivors navigating a post-apocalyptic Moscow ravaged by nuclear and biological warfare. The series includes previous titles such as Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and the remastered Metro Redux collection.

Most recently, the franchise expanded with Metro Awakening, a VR spinoff released in 2024 for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR. The announcement of Metro 2039 signals a return to the series' core gameplay loop following the success of the 2019 sequel.

Critics previously praised Metro Exodus for its shift in tone. Polygon noted that while earlier entries focused on the inevitability of human self-destruction, Exodus "injects the Russian post-apocalypse with hope."
