Sandfall Interactive’s debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, completed a historic sweep of the major video game awards last week by winning Best Game at the BAFTA Games Awards in London. The victory marks the conclusion of a year-long dominance by the French RPG, which has now captured the 'Big Five' awards across the industry's most significant ceremonies.

According to a report from polygon.com, the win at the Queen Elizabeth Hall followed a period of tension during the ceremony where the game appeared to be losing several key categories. While titles like Death Stranding 2 and Blue Prince took home awards for Artistic Achievement and Game Design, Clair Obscur eventually secured wins for Best Debut, Performer in a Leading Role for Jennifer English, and finally, Best Game.

An unprecedented indie phenomenon

The game's success is particularly notable because of its status as an indie debut. Polygon.com reports that unlike previous 'Big Five' sweepers like Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur lacks a massive established license or a seasoned developer like Larian Studios. The title's rise was driven by critical acclaim and word of mouth rather than heavy pre-release promotion.

At the time of its release last year, the game's total dominance was difficult to predict, especially given the high-profile presence of titles like Grand Theft Auto 6. However, the outlet notes that as the year progressed, most competitors faded, leaving Sandfall's title as the clear favorite by the time of The Game Awards in December, where it earned nine wins.

This momentum continued through the DICE and GDC Awards, culminating in the London victory. The report highlights that the game's success stems from a 'genuine hunger among players for freshness and authenticity' in a market often dominated by large, risk-averse publishers.

Writing on the significance of the win, the Polygon.com author noted that the game's victory is a testament to its creative origins: "Clair Obscur was made with love and received with it."
