Director and writer Christopher McQuarrie and actor Michael B. Jordan are reportedly attached to a new film adaptation of Electronic Arts' Battlefield franchise. The project is currently being shopped to various Hollywood studios with a primary focus on securing a theatrical release.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter and covered by Kotaku, McQuarrie is set to write, direct, and produce the adaptation. Michael B. Jordan is attached as a producer and may also star in the film, though the report notes his acting role remains subject to "several factors."
Electronic Arts (EA) is also attached to the project as a producer. Industry reports suggest that EA is unlikely to license the Battlefield intellectual property cheaply, and the involvement of high-profile talent like McQuarrie and Jordan is expected to result in a pricey production package.
This development sets up a potential box office rivalry with Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Paramount is currently fast-tracking and developing a Call of Duty movie, a move that brings the two long-standing PC and console rivals into direct competition in the film industry.
This cinematic matchup mirrors a recent shift in the gaming market. While the Battlefield franchise faced challenges with the performance of Battlefield V in 2018 and Battlefield 2042 in 2021, the series saw a massive resurgence in 2025.
According to Kotaku, Battlefield 6 became the best-selling game of 2025. This success occurred even as Activision's Black Ops 7 was described as a "meh Call of Duty sequel," allowing EA to win the year in gamer dollars.
Interestingly, McQuarrie has a long-standing professional relationship with Paramount through the Mission: Impossible franchise, which may influence where the Battlefield project is pitched.
