Bungie has released a major mid-season update for its extraction shooter Marathon, introducing new systems that reward players for cooperating with others. The patch, which includes version 1.0.6 and 1.0.5.2 updates, introduces the CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative (CARRI) to incentivize teamwork.

According to Polygon, CARRI rewards players for working together as a coordinated squad or for solo players who assist teammates via matchmaking. Players can spend earned CyberAcme Commendations at the CARRI armory to unlock weapons and reputation packs.

Kotaku reports that the system also provides bonuses for completing contracts or exfiltrating with players outside of a user's current crew. This initiative aims to provide loot to players who "decide to play nice together instead of shooting first and asking questions later."

New tools for de-escalation and class balancing

The update introduces the Mercy Kit, a new consumable that allows players to revive downed enemies. Bungie stated, “We wanted the new Mercy Kit to provide ways for players to bring back enemy players without spending a self-revive. Sometimes the de-escalation happens after the fight is over, we get it. Now you can make up for that quick trigger finger.”

New players will find a more controlled environment on the Perimeter map, which Kotaku reports is now solo-only until level 12. This change reduces the frequency of player encounters to help newcomers learn the game's loot loop.

Class balances have also shifted significantly. The Recon class received major buffs to its Echo Pulse and Tracker Drone abilities, with Echo pings now distinguishing between player runners and UESC targets. Conversely, thermal scopes faced nerfs, as Kotaku notes that deluxe rarity thermal optics no longer spawn and other versions have reduced effectiveness.

Weaponry saw both additions and adjustments. Eleven new blue rarity unique weapons were added to the Perimeter and Dire Marsh maps, featuring custom mods similar to Destiny 2 exotics. Railguns received a substantial buff, allowing players to hold a fully charged shot indefinitely.

Bungie is also experimenting with a new match type called Dire Marsh Sponsored. This mode uses free kits to ensure all players enter with similar, limited equipment, preventing snipers or high-tier gear from dominating the field.
