Bungie has announced a major balance adjustment for the most powerful weapon in its highly anticipated shooter, Marathon. The changes are designed to tone down the weapon's overwhelming presence and encourage players to explore a wider variety of tactical options.
According to the development team’s patch notes, the weapon was performing far too well in playtests, effectively “dominating” the meta. Bungie stated that the adjustment was necessary to “curb its dominance in the game” and ensure a healthier competitive balance across the entire arsenal.
Optimizing the Weapon Ecosystem
Previously, the community had widely reported that the weapon’s damage output was excessive, rendering other tactical choices virtually useless in combat. By lowering its base damage and increasing recoil, developers are aiming to bring the weapon’s performance back in line with their original design goals.
In their announcement, Bungie made it clear that they want to see more variety in firefights. The developers emphasized, “We don’t want a single weapon to become the mandatory choice for every match.”
In addition to the stat nerfs, the team has fine-tuned the gun’s ballistic feedback. These changes have been deployed with the latest patch, and players should already notice a significant shift in the weapon’s handling during live gameplay.
While the changes have drawn criticism from players who relied on the weapon, Bungie maintains that this is a necessary step to ensure the game’s long-term health. The team has promised to continue monitoring performance data and will make further adjustments based on player feedback.
