Blizzard Entertainment is launching Season 2 of Overwatch on April 14, introducing a new playable character and several gameplay updates to the hero shooter.
The update adds Sierra, a damage hero utilizing drones, to the game's roster. As the 51st playable character, Sierra is linked to the Helix security faction, the same group previously associated with the hero Pharah.
Players can also expect a rework of the Antarctic Peninsula map and the addition of Ramattra to Stadium mode. The update also brings back post-match accolades to highlight specific player achievements, such as high damage output and objective control.
Mixed reactions to Mythic skin
While the update includes a new Mythic weapon for Genji and a Diablo collaboration, the new 'Volted Overdrive' Mythic skin for Soldier: 76 has drawn criticism from long-time players. The skin features a cyborg aesthetic with neon lights and armored plating.
Critics argue the design ignores the character's established lore. According to a report from Kotaku, the skin leans into a younger, more 'clean-cut' version of the character rather than his current identity as a grizzled, white-haired veteran.
'Just let him be an old man, Blizzard,' the Kotaku report stated, noting that the skin's aesthetic contradicts the character's shift from a 'palatable face of Overwatch to a shadowy, gruff gunman.'
In addition to the cosmetic changes, the new season will introduce a match-wide voice chat lobby. This feature aims to facilitate player interaction, though it may present challenges for users preferring to avoid communication with strangers.
