Bethesda leadership recently addressed the studio's historical impact on the industry and defended recent design shifts within their latest release, Starfield, according to reports from PC Gamer.
An ex-marketing Vice President for Bethesda stated that the release of Skyrim marked a turning point where the studio's presence began to intimidate competitors.
"You have to be concerned about us if you think you're going to win game of the year," the former executive said, noting that Skyrim was the first title to make other studios fearful of the company's market position.
Starfield mechanics and developer response
In a separate discussion regarding the studio's recent title, Starfield, Todd Howard defended the company's decision to alter the functionality of the New Game Plus (NG+) mode.
Howard suggested that the initial implementation of the mechanic was misunderstood by the player base. He defended the studio's recent U-turn regarding how the feature operates.
"You can tell us if we're done our job right," Howard stated, emphasizing the studio's openness to player feedback regarding gameplay loops.
These comments highlight a period of transition for Bethesda as they manage the legacy of their most successful franchise while navigating player expectations for their newest universe.
