Anbernic has unveiled the RG Rotate, a new Android-based handheld gaming device featuring a rotating touchscreen. The company revealed the hardware through a promotional video showcasing its unique square-shaped design.
The device functions as a Game Boy-style handheld with a rotating display that allows the device to shrink in size. This square design differentiates the unit from the more rectangular handhelds typically seen in the emulation market.
The hardware utilizes a "self-developed ultra-thin alloy hinge built for lasting durability." Anbernic's focus on a durable hinge aims to address common concerns regarding moving parts in handheld consoles.
The hardware's exterior features a combination of aluminum and ABS plastic. This material mix supports a compact, pocket-friendly build designed for portability.
Control layout and ergonomics
The RG Rotate's control scheme includes a D-pad and four action buttons. This setup closely resembles the controls found on Anbernic’s existing RG35XXSP model.
The device lacks analog thumbsticks, focusing instead on traditional button inputs. However, the manufacturer included a specialized feature for the shoulder buttons.
The L2 and R2 buttons feature adjustable height settings. This allows players to modify the trigger's physical position to suit their ergonomic preferences.
Anbernic has not yet disclosed the specific processor powering the Android OS. Consequently, the device's maximum emulation capabilities remain unconfirmed.
The manufacturer also omitted specific details regarding the device's official launch date. Anbernic indicated that the RG Rotate is expected to release in the near future.
This release follows a period of experimental design from the manufacturer. Earlier this year, Anbernic introduced a wireless controller that integrated a heart rate monitor.
The company's focus on unique form factors distinguishes its product line from standard handheld competitors. The RG Rotate's rotating screen represents the latest attempt to modify the traditional handheld shape.
