Writer Rocket Shokai has confirmed that the upcoming Winter 2026 anime, Sentenced to be a Hero, drew significant creative inspiration from the video game Ace Combat 7.
In a recent interview with Anime News Network, Shokai explored the connection between the original light novel series and the flight simulator's narrative structure.
The developer's work at Studio KAI highlights how specific elements of the game helped shape the anime's central premise.
Shared themes of forced heroism
Shokai noted that the 'penal unit' episodes found in Ace Combat 7 directly influenced the concept of 'hero sentencing' in the new series.
Both stories center on protagonists forced into military service against their will. The anime's protagonist, Xylo Forbartz, shares striking similarities with the game's lead character, Trigger.
Both characters are wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to fight in conflicts where they have no personal stake. This shared focus on the transactional nature of war and moral ambiguity defines both works.
While the anime adapts the light novel, the cinematic aerial combat and gritty themes of the 2019 title provided a blueprint for the series' tone. The connection highlights a shared interest in the psychological cost of aerial warfare.
