Cloudflare has set a 2029 deadline to implement quantum-resistant encryption across its global infrastructure. The initiative is designed to defend internet traffic against "store now, decrypt later" attacks, in which bad actors harvest encrypted data today with the intention of unlocking it once powerful quantum computers become a reality.

Quantum computing poses a fundamental threat to the cryptographic architecture of the modern internet and the security of blockchain networks. While it would take traditional computers trillions of years to guess private keys, a sufficiently advanced quantum machine could potentially crack those same codes in a matter of hours.

The quantum threat to digital assets

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rely on Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) to secure funds and verify transactions. Industry experts warn that if quantum capabilities hit a critical threshold, attackers could derive private keys from public addresses, effectively allowing them to seize assets directly from wallets.

Cloudflare’s roadmap focuses on replacing vulnerable algorithms with new, quantum-safe alternatives that can withstand Shor’s algorithm. The company has already begun deploying experimental post-quantum protocols across its edge network to evaluate performance and stability.

While some critics argue that the threat could arrive sooner than anticipated, Cloudflare maintains that a phased approach is essential to maintaining the stability of the global web while migrating to more complex, resource-intensive security standards.

Beyond securing Bitcoin, this shift is vital for protecting sensitive data across the banking, government, and healthcare sectors. Cloudflare emphasizes that this transition requires more than just a software update; it necessitates a fundamental rethink of how keys are exchanged and how online identity is verified.

The company plans to collaborate closely with standards bodies like NIST to ensure that the protocols it adopts remain interoperable with other major technology providers. By 2029, Cloudflare expects quantum-safe encryption to be the default standard for all traffic flowing through its servers.
