KBank and Upbit partnership for Ripple-based remittances

South Korean bank KBank is partnering with cryptocurrency exchange Upbit to test onchain cross-border remittances using Ripple technology, according to a report from The Block.

The pilot program aims to explore the use of blockchain-based solutions to streamline international payments. By utilizing Ripple's infrastructure, the institutions intend to evaluate the efficiency of using distributed ledger technology for real-time, borderless transactions.

KBank, a major player in the South Korean financial sector, will work alongside Upbit, one of the region's largest digital asset exchanges. The collaboration focuses on testing the feasibility of moving value across borders using onchain protocols rather than traditional, slower banking networks.

Testing blockchain liquidity

The initiative specifically targets the reduction of friction and costs associated with traditional remittance methods. The test will assess how Ripple's network can facilitate near-instant settlement between the two entities.

While specific technical parameters of the pilot were not detailed in the report, the focus remains on the integration of Ripple's liquidity solutions within existing banking and exchange frameworks. This testing phase serves as a precursor to potential wider implementation of blockchain-based settlement services in the Korean market.
