Digital asset market maker GSR announced on April 7 that it has led an investment in Libeara, a tokenization platform incubated by SC Ventures, the innovation arm of Standard Chartered. This investment marks a significant milestone in GSR’s strategy to build a comprehensive investment banking suite for digital assets and real-world assets (RWA).

Previously, GSR had already addressed gaps in its token advisory business through the acquisitions of Autonomous and Architech. These moves enabled the firm to offer end-to-end services, ranging from early-stage project strategy to post-launch liquidity management.

"The core capability we were missing was a tokenization platform—the actual technical means to execute tokenization," said Joshua Riezman, Chief Legal and Strategy Officer at GSR, in an interview. "Rather than building or acquiring one, we chose to partner with this exceptional company incubated by SC Ventures."

Building a Full-Service Web3 Investment Bank

Launched by Standard Chartered in 2023, Libeara provides regulated tokenization infrastructure. The platform has already supported over $1 billion in on-chain asset issuance, including assisting ChinaAMC in launching Asia’s first tokenized retail money market fund. Additionally, Libeara holds a Capital Markets Services license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

While GSR did not disclose specific financial terms, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the partnership is expected to deepen as business scales. Riezman noted that the collaboration highlights the growing convergence between Wall Street and the crypto industry: "For GSR to be the lead investor in a project incubated by Standard Chartered is something that would have been unimaginable in the past. Usually, the banks are the ones investing in us, so this shift in the dynamic is very interesting."

For Standard Chartered, Libeara is a cornerstone of its broader plan to build out a crypto prime brokerage business. For GSR, the investment supports its ambition to become a compliant capital markets partner capable of "effectively tokenizing any asset." As the partnership evolves, GSR is working to bring the traditional investment banking model into the Web3 ecosystem to meet the surging demand for on-chain assets.
