Former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Chris Giancarlo is retiring from his legal career to launch a full-time practice as a corporate advisor for the crypto and technology sectors.

Giancarlo, who earned the moniker "Crypto Dad" during his tenure as CFTCO chair from 2017 to 2019, most recently served as senior counsel at the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

In a message posted on X, Giancarlo stated he will now focus on advising founders, builders, and CEOs within the fintech and digital asset industries.

"From here on, I’ll devote my time to advising founders & builders of #FinTech & #DigitalAssets and their CEOs and boards, research & writing on public policy issues, and continuing work with non-profit programs," Giancarlo said.

A legacy of regulatory innovation

During his leadership at the CFTC, Giancarlo oversaw the introduction of the world's first federally regulated Bitcoin futures markets. This included the self-certification of BTC derivatives by the CME Group and Cboe Futures Exchange.

He also established LabCFTC, the agency's dedicated unit for technological innovation. His approach was characterized by a proactive stance toward digital assets during a period of significant regulatory skepticism.

Giancarlo’s advisory portfolio already includes prominent industry players such as Polymarket and Paxos. He has also served as an advisor to Sygnum Bank and as an independent director for Nomura.

Beyond corporate consulting, Giancarlo will continue his involvement with the Digital Dollar Project, a non-profit he co-founded to advocate for a central bank digital currency. He also remains an advisor to the Chamber of Digital Commerce, a group focused on U.S. blockchain policy.
