Decentralized email platform Dmail Network announced on Thursday that after five years of operation, the project will gradually cease all services starting May 15. Once the nodes are taken offline, all user data will become inaccessible, and the team has urged users to export their emails before the deadline.
The Dmail team attributed the shutdown to high infrastructure costs. The announcement noted that as the user base grew, the bandwidth, storage, and computing costs required to maintain the decentralized network increased exponentially, severely straining the project's budget and making sustainable operations impossible.
Profitability Struggles and Token Collapse
Beyond the pressure of technical costs, Dmail also faced significant setbacks in its commercialization efforts. The team admitted that while they experimented with various paid models, they were unable to find a value proposition that users were willing to pay for. Furthermore, the native DMAIL token failed to establish effective use cases, preventing the project’s economic model from closing the loop. In their statement, the team candidly acknowledged that the departure of core members further weakened their ability to maintain such high-cost infrastructure, and multiple attempts at fundraising and acquisition ultimately ended in failure.
Following the news, the DMAIL token experienced a total collapse on the BNB Chain. According to CoinGecko, the token plunged nearly 70% within 24 hours, hitting an all-time low of $0.000167. Since peaking at $0.97 in early 2024, the price of DMAIL has effectively bottomed out, with its market capitalization shrinking to less than $15,000.
Dmail’s failure reflects the broader challenges facing the Web3 communications sector. In their announcement, the team referenced the pivots of platforms like Lens and Friend.tech, suggesting that decentralized social applications struggle to build sustainable growth and profitability models when competing against centralized rivals. While the team expressed hope that they might relaunch the project in a more mature form if conditions allow in the future, they stated that for now, they must "bow to reality."
"If possible, we hope the crypto market will focus more on the product itself rather than just the price," the Dmail team wrote in their farewell letter.
