Senator Blumenthal Questions SEC Over Trump-Linked Crypto Favoritism

Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a formal letter to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul Atkins. He questions whether individuals tied to President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency ventures received preferential treatment. The inquiry focuses specifically on the dismissal of fraud charges against Tron founder Justin Sun.

The letter requests detailed records and communications related to enforcement decisions involving cryptocurrency firms. Sun agreed to a $10 million civil penalty to settle the charges earlier this month. Blumenthal seeks documents regarding the timing and nature of the dismissal to ensure transparency.

Enforcement Questions

The inquiry also questions the abrupt departure of Margaret Ryan from the agency. She served only six months as director of the Division of Enforcement before leaving. Reports suggest senior leadership intervened to prohibit the Division from pursuing cases against certain companies.

According to Blumenthal, Sun began buying into President Trump’s ventures after facing federal prosecution. He purchased millions of dollars worth of the $TRUMP memecoin which made him its largest holder. This purchase entitled him to a private dinner with the President in early 2026.

Regulatory Context

"People are losing trust," Rep. Stephen Lynch told Atkins during a hearing.

The SEC has closed multiple high-profile cases originally brought during the Joe Biden administration recently. The agency ended its lawsuit against Coinbase in February 2025 after significant legal battles. It also moved to dismiss its case against Binance and founder Changpeng Zhao in May 2025.

Trump has granted clemency to several prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry recently. This includes Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes who faced criminal charges. These actions align with the administration’s broader policy to reduce regulatory pressure on the sector.

Blumenthal’s request adds further criticism from Democratic lawmakers over the SEC’s approach to crypto enforcement. House Democrats including Representatives Maxine Waters and Brad Sherman warned about political influence. Representative Stephen Lynch told Atkins that people are losing trust in the agency.

The senator asked the SEC to provide the requested records to the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations by April 13. The request includes any documents related to Zhao’s case as well as contacts between the chairman’s office. He seeks records of contacts between the chairman’s office and members of the Trump or Witkoff families.

This situation highlights growing concerns about market integrity and potential conflicts of interest within the regulatory body. The outcome will influence future crypto regulatory frameworks and investor confidence globally. Analysts will watch how the SEC responds to these subpoenas regarding enforcement discretion.
