Social media platform Bluesky suffered intermittent service outages on Monday, leaving users across the globe unable to access the site. While Bluesky officially attributed the failure to issues with an 'upstream service provider,' the explanation failed to quell user frustration, instead sparking a heated debate over the platform's development practices.

'Vibe Coding' Sparks a Crisis of Confidence

Following the outage, many users immediately pointed fingers at the Bluesky development team, accusing them of over-relying on AI-assisted tools for what is known as 'vibe coding.' Across social media, users flooded the platform with memes, sarcastic remarks, and critical posts, arguing that this AI-heavy approach has led to a decline in code quality.

Bluesky user T-Kay wrote on the platform: 'Any programmer using “vibe coding” or relying on AI to write their code is clearly incompetent and should be fired immediately. Coding requires actual skill, not just churning out shoddy, half-baked work.'

This backlash highlights a growing skepticism among users regarding the role of AI in software development. While many professional developers have embraced AI-assisted programming, a significant portion of the user base views AI as a convenient scapegoat for technical instability.

Bluesky’s development team has previously been transparent about their use of AI tools. In late March, founder and Chief Innovation Officer Jay Graber stated bluntly: 'Bluesky is built by AI; our engineers and even some non-technical staff are using Claude Code.'

Platform technical advisor Jeromy Johnson has been even more vocal. In February, he claimed that roughly 99% of the code he had written over the previous two months was generated by Claude, emphasizing that the pace of technological change is far exceeding expectations. While this transparency highlights the company’s forward-thinking approach, it has also made the development team an easy target for criticism whenever the platform experiences a hiccup.
