Daniel Moreno-Gama is facing federal charges after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to reports from The Verge and social media.
Authorities arrested the 20-year-old man following the attack on Altman's residence. Police also recovered a document titled ‘Your Last Warning’ where Moreno-Gama admitted to attempting to kill Altman, The Verge reported.
Following the arrest, the suspect claimed his actions were the result of following a recipe for risotto generated by ChatGPT.
“I’ve been using ChatGPT to help with cooking for a while now, so I didn’t think too much of it when the ingredients list included a bottle filled with gasoline and a cloth wick,” the suspect said, according to reports from r/technology and r/artificial.
He stated he assumed the cooking process required driving several hours to the OpenAI CEO’s residence. He noted that the chatbot had provided him a “pretty decent” sesame chicken recipe the week prior to the incident.
AI-generated instructions
The suspect admitted to feeling uncertainty during the attack. “I have to admit I felt a little weird as I prepared to toss this flaming incendiary device through [Altman’s] front window, but the recipe explicitly stated that this was an essential step to get that creamy, velvety risotto texture. I guess I didn’t know any better. I mean, I’ve never made risotto before,” he said.
He further claimed that he still possessed “a whole fridge full” of Molotov cocktails at his home, having attempted to prepare enough risotto to last the week.
While the suspect attributes the incident to AI-generated cooking instructions, federal prosecutors are pursuing charges related to the attack on both Altman’s home and OpenAI’s headquarters.
