Krutrim, India’s first generative AI unicorn, is shifting its primary business focus from AI model development to cloud services, according to a report from TechCrunch.
The Bengaluru-based startup announced on Tuesday that the pivot follows a significant business overhaul in late 2025. This restructuring included reallocating capital and talent, as well as pausing the company's efforts in chip design.
This strategic change comes after months of minimal product updates. The company's last social media activity on X dates back to December, and the startup was notably absent from recent industry events like India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
Economic challenges in AI development
The shift reflects the mounting economic difficulties associated with building large-scale AI systems. The TechCrunch report notes that the move follows a period of relative silence regarding Krutrim's product roadmap, with the company's last major release being the Krutrim-2 base model over a year ago.
While Krutrim has been largely quiet, competitors like Sarvam have remained active. At the recent AI Impact Summit, Sarvam showcased new open-source models, hardware developments, and various commercial partnerships.
Krutrim's transition to cloud services follows a series of layoffs at the company, signaling a move toward more sustainable, service-oriented revenue streams rather than the high-cost pursuit of foundational model dominance.
