Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s xAI have reached agreements to allow the United States government to review their new artificial intelligence models before public release, according to a report by The Verge.

The partnership involves the Commerce Department’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI). The agency plans to use these collaborations to conduct pre-deployment evaluations and targeted research to assess the capabilities of frontier AI technologies.

CAISI has already been active in this space, having performed 40 reviews of models from OpenAI and Anthropic since 2024. According to Bloomberg, both OpenAI and Anthropic recently renegotiated their existing partnerships with the center to align with priorities outlined in President Donald Trump’s AI Action Plan.

Potential for expanded oversight

New regulatory measures may expand even further under the current administration. A Monday report from The New York Times suggests that President Trump is considering an executive order designed to bring tech executives and government officials together to oversee new AI models.

Chris Fall, the director of CAISI, emphasized the necessity of these collaborative efforts in a press release.

"Independent, rigorous measurement science is essential to understanding frontier AI and its national security implications," Fall said. "These expanded industry collaborations help us scale our work in the public interest at a critical moment."
